NESF Trustees and Officers

Board of Trustees - February, 2003

Chairman - Warren R. Hartwell    Mr. Hartwell was educated at Boston College, Boston University, and the University of Rhode Island. Since 1973, he has been president of WRH, Inc., a company that specializes in the manufacture of plastic food processing equipment for large scale candy producers and others. He has been a member and trustee of NESF for many years and formerly served as Vice President of Membership.

Secretary - Barry W. Eager    Mr. Eager, a live-long resident of Berlin, Massachusetts, is a retired elementary school teacher of twenty-five years. He is currently President and Custodian of Collections for the Berlin Art and Historical Society. He is an accomplished writer and has been published in Steamboat Bill, The Sea Chest and Sea History. A long time Director and current Secretary of the Steamship Historical Society of America, he serves as their representative on the Board of the Heritage Harbor Museum in Providence, RI. Barry is a founder and incorporator of NESF and has been the informal historian since its early years.

Treasurer - Robert A. Iadicicco    Mr. Iadicicco is a Financial Systems Analyst and managed the financial departments and computer systems of the law firm, Rubin, Quinn & Moss and later, the firm of Brookman, Rosenberg, Brown & Sandler before retiring to Martha's Vineyard in 1999. For twenty-four years, he served as Treasurer to the Weavers Way Cooperative Association, a food co-op with an annual budget of $4.5 million. In addition to his financial expertise, Mr. Iadicicco holds an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Drexel University.

VP-Promotion - Peter W. Yoars    Mr. Yoars graduated from Duke University with a degree in Business Administration. After graduating from college, he served in the US Air Force for four years, after which, he spent twenty-one years in advertising. Mr. Yoars has worked for Cunningham and Walsh, Young and Rubican, Foote, Cone and Belding, and DKG, Inc. His past clients have included General Foods, Ocean Spray, Milton Bradley, Clairol, Frito Lay, and Corning Glass. Since 1982, Peter and his wife have owned Yoars Associates, representing multiple manufacturers in the tabletop and giftware business selling to over 500 retail stores in New England and New York state.

Trustee - Robert M. Astill    Mr. Astill has been a Credit and Collections Manager since 1997, with Garelick Farms - Lynn, whose parent food distribution company, Suiza, GTL LLC, reports annual sales in excess of $250 Million. Nantucket, miniature He graduated from Massachusets Merrimack College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Political Science, where he was named to the Dean's List. Included in his list of Professional Affiliations is Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in the East, both since 1996, and Who's Who in America since 1997.

Trustee - George Berkowitz    Mr. Berkowitz attended Dartmouth College and the OPM (Owen/President/Manager) program at Harvard Business School. He is the founder of Legal Sea Foods, Inc in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1988, Mr. Berkowitz co-authored, with food expert Jane Diefer, the Sea Foods Cookbook. Some of his recent professional affiliations include: The Board of Trustees, Boston Harbor Associaation, Coastal Resources Advisory/Coastal Zone Management, and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. He has been a guest lecturer around the world and has won numerous awards in the Hospitality Industry.

Trustee - John Boardman    A long time member of NESF, Mr. Boardman was unanimously elected to the Board of Trustees in 2001. He lives in Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts, on the island of Martha's Vineyard, and joined efforts with NESF Port Captain, Dick Sherman, to launch the 2002 "Nickels for NOBSKA."

Trustee - Thomas R. Carrol    Mr. Carroll is a Northeastern University graduate with proven management skills and success in worldwide product logistics, with specific expertise in customer service, sales administration, inventory management, global trade management and data processing project management. He began his career with Polaroid Corporation and after thirty-six years there, he went on to form the Carroll Group, a worldwide consulting firm specializing in logistics, transportation and customer service.

Trustee - Brian Dawicki    Mr. Dawicki has been employed since 1992 by the Commonwealth Gas Company. Son of NOBSKA's last chief engineer, Mr. Dawicki spent several years in the United States Coastguard and is a Chief Petty Officer, USCG Reserve. In 2002, he was sent by the Coastguard to the Republic of Georgia (formerly of USSR) to train their personnel in cutter operations.

Trustee - Charles H. Franklin, Jr.    Mr. Franklin, a New Bedford resident, has been owner of Franklin Utility Corporation for over forty years. He is a trustee of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy and was the Division Chairperson for the '96 United Way Campaign. He has also served as Massachusetts Department of Public Works Associate Commissioner. Deeply interested in heritage preservation, Mr. Franklin has given his time, attention and expertise to numerous boards and committees over the years.

Trustee - Robert C. Harrall    A former chairman of the NESF board, Mr. Harrall is the chief court administer for the State of Rhode Island, a position he has held for eight years. An adjunct professor of public administration at the University of Rhode Island, Mr. Harrall holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Connecticut (1987), an A.M. in public administration from the University of Rhode Island (1964), and an A.B. from Drew University in political science (1962).

Trustee - Nancy Hartwell    Ms. Hartwell graduated from Shenandoah College in Virginia and taught grades four through six for a number of years. She is especially interested in the educational facet of NESF and offers input into attracting children's interest to the project. Ms. Hartwell was also Division Manager for World Book Encyclopedia and owner of Big Bag Corporation. Evening Trip Married on SS NOBSKA, she now works with her husband, currently NESF's Chairman, in their business, WRH Industries, Ltd., as a sales consultant responsible for attracting and implementing strategic partnerships, sales, marketing and trade shows.

Trustee - Claude R. Hodges    Ms. Hodges spent his entire career in the data-processing field, and was one of the early pioneers in the development of automatic teller machines and systems. Born in the United Kingdom, Mr. Hodges emigrated to the United States after World War II. He is a naturalized U.S. citizen. In 1948 he received a B.Sc. in accounting from Boston University. His career was spent with Burroughs Corporation, BayBanks (Massachusetts), and Wang Corporation. He retired from Wang in 1992.

Trustee - Richard A. Volkin, PE    As a retired Commander in the US Navy already holding a BS in Marine & Electrical Engineering, MS degrees in both Industrial Management and Civil Engineering, Mr. Volkin was awarded a PhD Jurisprudence in 2002. He's listed in Who's Who in Engineering, Who's Who in Technology Today and Who's Who Worldwide and on the registers of numerous professional societies that include The American College of Forensics.

Officers - February, 2003

President - Arthur M. Flathers    Mr. Flathers, who also served as Chairman of NESF, retired from the General Electric Company in 1993 where he was the senior management head of research and development for GE Aerospace, a more than $5 Billion enterprise doing business in all facets of the military and civilian aerospace industry. Mr. Flathers had previously held significant positions in marketing, planning, engineering and operations. He has managed several pioneer space and missile programs comparable in scope to rebuilding "Nobska". Mr. Flathers is a 1955 graduate of Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Business Director - Judith L. Jordan    Ms. Jordan has experience in business and accounting. Judy has worked as an Accounting Manager and was a Business Consultant for five years. She was also an Advertising Representative and wrote articles for the Free Press in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. EITHER Judy has manned NESF's office and been the Foundation's mainstay since the Spring of 1999. OR Since the Spring of 1999, Judy has briskly performed the "101 behind the scenes" tasks that kept the Foundation going.
